Catholic Identity and Religious Education

Lumen Christi is a school in the Diocese of Sale. An important learning area in our school is the teaching of Religious Education. We seek to pass on the Catholic Faith and traditions and to actively promote the faith development of each child.

Students in their classrooms participate in Religious Education for 30 minutes per day. They also have the opportunity to go to mass as a whole school at the Church twice a term. At Lumen Christi students enjoy the opportunity to learn about the stories and relevant messages of Jesus as inspiration for the choices they make in their own lives both at school and in the wider community. Social justice also plays an important role in the area of religious education. Students are encouraged to recognise their responsibility in caring for others and creating a more just society through the support of aid organisations and initiatives such as St Vincent De Paul, Catholic Missions and Caritas. Lumen Christi enthusiastically participate and implement fun and memorable fundraising opportunities to such causes through the year. 

CURRICULUM 

Lumen Christi implements the recommended Diocesean-wide Religious Education Curriculum called To Live in Christ Jesus as our guiding program. This curriculum offers students a sequential learning experience with opportunities that take into consideration the lived experiences of students through lenses of the Catholic tradition. It is delivered through an inquiry approach which helps students 'recontextualise' the Catholic tradition by connecting Scripture to the world they live in today.  We express our faith in open and friendly dialogue with those of other faiths or nonbelief. Students at Lumen Christi are always invited INTO the faith of what Catholics believe but we also encourage inclusion of both nonbelievers and those who are part of other faiths.

SACRAMENTS 

Lumen Christi is part of the Churchill Parish and children have the choice and opportunity to complete sacramental preparation as a Parish based, family centred and school supported program. Children in Grade 3 can receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation, in Grade 4 their First Eucharist and in Grade 6 their Confirmation.

           Term 2: First Eucharist- Sunday 21st April

                      Confirmation- Thursday 23rd May

           Term 4:  Reconciliation- Wednesday 27th November

MASS

Whole school Mass is celebrated at least twice a term for special feast days and celebrations such as Lent, the beginning of term, end of term, Pentecost and Advent and parents and parishioners are always warmly invited and encouraged to attend these as part of our school community. Our students have the wonderful opportunity to go to the church as a whole school, participate in the celebration of mass in many ways, including reading prayers, singing, responding and helping to run the parts of the mass.
