From Mrs Darby

Dear Families,

Last week, I sent home a “Parent Code of Conduct” for Parents and Guardians to read and to sign. Please don’t be alarmed by this – it certainly wasn’t aimed at anybody. In fact, we are very lucky here at Lumen Christi with our families, certainly it has been my experience that our families are able to come and speak with me or their child’s teacher directly about any issues they are having respectfully and reasonably. The Code of Conduct really just serves the purpose of establishing clear and consistent ways of communicating with each other. Both staff and the School Advisory Committee were asked to read the document and help make any suggestions and changes. As a school, there are certain policies and procedures that we have to have in place, and this is recommended practice by DOSCEL.

Thank you to all of the parents and guardians who attended Parent Teacher Interviews and PSG meetings last week. The feedback from teachers is that both nights were really positive and that they really enjoyed the opportunity to chat with families about their child’s progress and achievements.

We have a Dad’s night happening tomorrow night – a note will come home tonight for any families that would like to come. We encourage our families to take part, it’s good fun and Mr Clarke does a wonderful job bringing dads, pops, uncles and friends together. It’s part of what makes a school community like ours really special.

Last night, I was lucky enough to attend the Women’s World Cup match between Australia and Canada. What a match! I know many of our students were watching at home. It’s an exciting time having an event that the whole country can get behind. And it’s certainly lovely to see our team win. However, here at Lumen Christi we are spending quite a bit of time teaching our children about Resilience – which is one of our School Wide Expectations. Last night as our Aussie team were celebrating, my eye was drawn to the Canadian team whose hopes had been dashed. They stood arm in arm in a circle and I’m not sure what their coach might have said to them, but there was no finger pointing or blaming or shaming – they were united. It’s worth taking notice of how people and teams respond when things don’t go their way. It’s a skill that we can and must teach our children if they are going to be successful in the world. Our win last night also followed a disappointing loss to Nigeria – it’s worth remembering that it’s through the failures that we learn and grow to become better.

Don’t forget the Book Fair is on at school this week!

Next week, we will be running a “Give a damn, Give a Can” drive. Cans will be collected in classrooms and donated to Vinnie’s who do such amazing work in our community. I know our school will be generous in helping others.

Have a wonderful week ahead,

Sally
